Get Inspired by The Dream Home

By Lise S. Beane

If you have been putting off an interior design project, you may be glad you waited. The new thinking and luxurious materials in the Dream home at the Boston Design Center (BDC) are turning everything up a notch. Inspirational and instructional, rather than promotional, this exciting installation on the sixth floor of the Boston Design Center showcases nine rooms that meet design challenges by cleverly combing the talents of top Boston area designers with the resources of the 87 showrooms of the Design Center. It is a show filled with good ideas.

In the home's library, Back Bay and Beacon Hill designer Michael Carter spans the centuries by pairing classical interior architectural elements with custom contemporary furniture. A collection of books balanced by sculptural antiquities provide the accents. But it is the details that make this room sing, like the beautifully turned legs of the twin chaises.

Adventurous and bold, South End designer Michael Barnum's home lounge is inspired by international travel. Subtle applications are the keys to success. A chandelier of cascading crystal droplets evokes the Iguazu falls in Argentina. New glass bead wallpaper coordinates and catches the light. Other walls are painted in wide horizontal bands of color like the striated polychromy stone walls of medieval Florence. Chairs and a French art deco bar serve to define the room's purpose and give it a cosmopolitan flair.

A bathroom by South End designer, David Hacin brings the world of nature into focus for a nature photographer client. Floor tiles are no longer square, but long and wrap up the side of the wall. The bathtub looks like a large egg. A jungle is visible through the windows; however, the room is as civilized and posh as they come.

The Dream Home is free and open to the public through Tuesday, July 31; Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Thursday from 9 am to 8 pm. For more information, visit www.bostondesign.com/dreamhome.
